Who is Bob Vance?
In addition to being a Certified Professional Life Coach, for over thirty years I've worked as a social worker in a wide variety of fields, from psychiatric social work to adolescent counseling. I spent eleven years as a family counselor with a hospice organization. I am licensed in the state of Michigan as a social worker and am ordained as a minister. One of my specialties is highly personalized and/or alternative pre-marital and wedding coaching.
Coaching offers me a collaborative way to approach the issues and problems people face. It is strengths based. I believe people have the resources and skill to uncover their own best way to help overcome and cope with life’s quandaries, losses and growth.

My Job as a Coach
"My job as a coach is to facilitate, not lead... to help my clients lead themselves inside their own sets of norms and values. While I have some pretty strong and dependable values of my own, as well as opinions, it is completely outside of my job as a coach to allow those opinions to be overly influential in how I facilitate each clients' journey with me. I see that facilitation as shining a light on processes that are often already in place, but may be hidden, may be tangled in the thorny briers of the stuff of life that can keep clarity of direction hidden; perhaps to help a client see what exactly needs to be built next, or that the travel along the path is already being undertaken. In clearing away the brambles it can be taken with more purpose and more direction."

Some Coaching Basics
What is Coaching?
Coaching is about becoming aware of how to live life to the fullest. It is a way to explore and find personal and vocational direction. It helps develop confidence in problem solving, and an assertive approach toward realizing potential. Just as an athlete works with a coach to achieve success in sports, a coach can help motivate and inspire. A coach is a partner and guide.
The Session
I come to coaching with a wide repertoire of skills and experience. My career is highlighted by hands-on learning, in real-life situations, integrated with the flexible use of widely diverse theories and techniques. With those I coach as the focus, and because each person brings a unique set of experiences, strengths, hopes and dreams, I expect and need to learn as much from those I coach as they do from our sessions. Each session, and my work with each person, is entirely individualized. My job is to assist each person in the development of their own self improvement strategies. We discover, uncover and implement hidden or under-utilized strengths and gifts.
In the end I feel it is my job to help those I coach become their own coach.
How does it work?
The number and frequency of coaching sessions, as well as a price and payment plan, are arrived at individually according to the needs and goals of each prospective client. This plan is a mutual agreement between myself and those I coach, usually arrived at during a free trial session. I can also discuss some particulars via email or introductory phone calls. Payment can be made per number of sessions, monthly, or weekly. Arrangements can be made for bartering of services. There may be discounts for advance payments for more multiple sessions.
Where would we meet?
I can accommodate both in-person, telephone and Skype contacts with email as a additional tool. I am happy to visit my clients at their homes or offices. Together we decide which form, or what combination, will work best, as well as who places any phone session calls. I am happy to work with people from anywhere in the world, but can work in English only.
